Hair
Most people as they get older will bemoan how they miss being skinnier when they were younger, but I never appreciated being naturally thin when I was growing up because I was teased constantly about it and became very self-conscious about it. I think it's even safe to say I developed some unhealthy emotional eating habits from not being able to put on weight during adolescence. But I digress..
I’d say what I miss most about my younger physique is having really good hair. It looked good short, medium, or long. I went through all sorts of phases growing up. Styled my hair like Brandon from 90210 through elementary school. Had a skate punk undercut in middle school. Started high school in 1996 when George Clooney’s Ceaser cut was all the rage, and even it looked on me.
My sophomore year of high school I lost a Super Bowl bet and had to get my hair buzzed. After that I decided to just let it grow out for the rest of my high school days. It was particularly fantastic during those late teens and early 20s when I kept it long for years. It’s only thing I ever got random compliments from strangers about. Well, in recent years I have also received many compliments from people on the street on my beard when it has been long and luscious.
My hair is still very thick on sides and in the back but has been getting thinner on top. I may never go completely bald, but I think about shaving my head all the time so I don’t have to work with such mediocrity. Of course I won’t really do that because I am afraid of how misshapen my head based on how my scalp feels.
Nowadays I tend to keep it on the shorter side because I just don’t know what to do with it. A few times I have done the 1940s retro style cut that has been very popular in recent years but has now been ruined after becoming synonymous with Alt Right Neo Nazi douchebags.
When I was with my ex I knew she didn’t like how I styled my hair most of the time. She preferred it messier, but I just had a hard time leaving the house with bedhead. And the one thing I didn’t like about my hair when I was a kid was the occasional cowlick, so mussy hair just reminds me of that damn cowlick.
I tried to get her to go with me to the barber so she could provide input, because I honestly did want it and was open to getting something she liked. But she never did. And so I would just go get pretty much the same thing every 3 months or so. Which is what I’m still doing.
