Dog days

Monday was tough. Computer systems at work were buggy or down most of the day (and then buggy through rest of the week) due to issues with an upgrade that didn't work very well. Tuesday morning I overslept and was running late for work when I got into a car accident. It was my fault. I was waiting to merge onto a highway, sneezed and hit the gas accidentally. Slammed into a truck in front of me with a large trailer hitch.

Nobody was hurt. The other car didn't even have any damage. The trailer hitch absorbed my blow and pierced my car's grill causing quite a lot of damage. Had to get towed to the body shop and miss work that day since I didn't get my rental until 4pm.

Amidst a very tough week I decided to start a new intermittent fasting routine to help with my health and stave off diabetes for as long as I can. It’s a 16-8 intermittent fast whereupon I only eat meals between 1pm and 8pm, so my body has longer overnight and next day fasting period to burn more fat. Terry Crews does it. I think it’s starting to become trendy among men especially right now. Supposed to help burn fat without losing muscle mass. I’m on Day 3 and I’ve lost 4 pounds.

It’s certainly going to be tougher to do it on the weekends. I’m also trying to wean myself off sugar and carbs as much as possible, shift more towards a high protein, high fiber diet as I did when I was an athlete in high school. I’m not saying I’m ever going to get in as good of shape I was at 17 again, but there are some serious genetic landmines with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease that I’m trying to fight against while I still can.

I quite drinking, I quit smoking, I quit all kinds of recreational drugs. I can do this.

Got the estimate for my car, just over six grand. Ouch. Only going to cost me $500 deductible, but still ouch. It’s always worth it to have good insurance with rental coverage. By the time it gets out of the shop after Labor Day it will be time for an oil change and I’ve needed to get it detailed because I make a mess inside and don’t keep it clean enough. I miss my car. Can't listen to satellite radio or synch my phone to the rental car and listen to podcasts. Also can't use toll roads since I don't have my TXtag on the rental.

I forgot how expensive new cars are in the early going. More incentive for me to find a new (hopefully better or at least more satisfying) job closer to home so I can cut down on the wear & tear and high mileage due to my ridiculous daily commute. And a job where I don’t have to eat lunch in my car each day would be nice, too.

I finally got around to seeing Set It Up on Netflix, which people have been raving about for a while. Meh. Didn’t do much for me. I love romantic comedies, always have. This one stars two young actors I like a lot (Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch) and two established stars I love (Lucy Lui and Taye Diggs). I just didn’t find it very funny or all that charming or interesting. It wasn’t some big reinvention or subversion of the romcom tropes like it had been described. It’s not terrible, but it’s not very noteworthy or memorable.

Hoping to catch BlacKKKlansman (I just read the book last week) and Crazy Rich Asians this weekend. Unless I don’t get out of the house much except for running errands, in which case I’m sure I’ll pick back up my series re-watch of the Alien films.

It's so hot and humid this month. Makes my weird dreams even weirder as of late. I'll be happy when summer is over, but I feel less excited for the fall than I normally am. Perhaps I'm feeling the weight of the quick passage of time and feeling like I'm not progressing enough in life as I'd like to be.
